About My Stone Carving Journey
Having carved stone for over four decades and exhibited my sculptures in numerous exhibitions, I’ve come to realize that what fascinates people most isn’t just the finished piece—but the making of it. While the shaping of stone has become second nature to me, these skills were earned through time, dedication, and no small amount of blood, sweat, and the occasional tear. realise
Over the years, I’ve led workshops in the South of France, collaborating with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry with its Pont du Gard Project and placing myself in schools to teach both adults and children. These experiences deepened my appreciation for the joy and connection that arise when sharing knowledge. Now, back in Dorset, I’m thrilled to run courses that pass on the craft I hold dear—celebrating the beauty of the material, the rhythm of the process, and the personal discovery that comes with each carving. You can see some of my journey on my blog page.

Stone Carving Workshop
After the initial preparations—sourcing the finest grain of Portland Stone, cutting each block with care, setting up the gazebos, installing sturdy work tables, and sharpening tools until the edges glint—the space begins to hum with quiet anticipation. The garden, now transformed into an open-air studio, waits to welcome its sculptors.
Stone Carving Workshop All Set To Go
The Carving Material: Portland Stone.
We will be working with the world-renowned Portland Stone, famously used by Sir Christopher Wren in the construction of St. Paul’s Cathedral. This storied material carries centuries of architectural heritage and is cherished for its beauty and versatility.
For this workshop, I’ve sourced the finest-grain Portland Stone, ideally suited for stone carving. Its balanced composition—neither too hard nor too soft—makes it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced sculptors. The fine grain allows for delicate detailing, encouraging precision and creative expression.
Workshop Overview: From Stone to Story
Participants arrive, each carrying not just curiosity but a desire to connect—with the stone, with their hands, and with a lineage of craftsmanship that stretches far behind us. As they gather around the tables, there’s a shared moment of quiet reverence for the material: ancient, resistant, and full of possibility.
We begin with an introduction to the stone—its history, its personality, and how its shape and structure might influence the final artwork. Participants are familiarised with the tools they’ll be using, from chisels and hammers to rifflers and rasps, learning how each uniquely interacts with the material.
Next, we move on to design selection. Some participants arrive with ideas of their own, drawn from nature, symbols, or personal meaning. Others choose from a selection of templates I provide, which are designed to harmonise with the stone’s dimensions and character. We discuss how to adapt designs to fit the stone’s size and surface, ensuring a balanced and intentional composition.
Then begins the hands-on carving. Techniques vary depending on the design and desired finish—from crisp lines that catch the light to textured surfaces that invite touch. We explore how to achieve contrast and emphasis through texture, using everything from broad strokes to fine detailing to make their carving truly stand out.
Some Templates
Naturally, the students begin carving with a little trepidation, learning how to hold the chisels, the angle of attack to get a clean line on their stone. As the day progresses, I can hear the rhythm of the hammers change from erratic knocks to a more controlled, regular speed. At times, subconsciously, they become a harmonious, in-sync rhythm. I can see how they begin to master their technique, building confidence and taking pleasure in the creation of an original artwork.

Accidents
There are, of course, the little accidents—inevitable companions in the carving process. A chipped beak, a line that strays from intention: such moments can unsettle the rhythm of creation. But rather than interrupt it, they offer an invitation. When these mishaps arise, I work alongside the student to gently shift the design, allowing the material to guide the solution. A minor adjustment can restore harmony, sometimes even enhancing the piece in unexpected ways. The trick lies in welcoming these unforeseen turns—not as failures, but as opportunities for innovation. In stone, as in life, resilience is often shaped by how we respond when the path veers.
